Christian Concern is a non-profit organization and ministry of the United Church of Christ. Among other properties, they manage the Jefferson Apartments located at 1514 W. Marshall Street which is home to 197 residents, several of whom are members of our church. Christian Concern provides accommodations and services which nurture older persons and improve their quality of life. The average age of Jefferson Apartments residents is 77.5 years. Jefferson East has 36 apartments, is home to 36 residents with an average age of 78.9 years. 61% of the residents require some level of assistance to complete one or more activities of daily living.

As one ages, proper nutrition and healthy eating are essential for mental acuteness, resistance to disease, increased energy levels, faster recuperation times and better management of chronic health-related problems. Major concern and challenges for the economically disadvantaged, frail and disabled populations are isolation and poor nutrition which can negatively impact one’s choices, thus their quality of life.

The total cost to operate Christian Concern’s meal program is $7,009. This includes $6,074 for the meals ($2.92 per meal times 2080 meals per year). $210 for the Health Department licensure and $725 for supplies. As with any similar non-profit organization, Christian Concern is dependent on the generosity of its supporters to meet the expenses of continued operation.
