As Elizabeth explained, the mission of the school has always been to provide an environment and experience which will help a child make the transition from home to kindergarten. In the early 1960’s, three elementary school principals in the Norristown District and their supervisors determined that many of the students in kindergarten were not prepared. The community was also in transition in terms of ethnicity, language, income, values and most families were led by a single parent.
The first location of the school was on George Street at Schwenkfelder Church for 30 years, then to our church, Christ Church, for the past 20 years. Christ Church offers the school free housing as well as secretarial and financial support. Pam Calisto started with the school and has celebrated more than 50 years, to the present, as the main instructor. Irma Johnson and Pete McManus also assist with school programs. Pete is instrumental in helping the Hispanic children learn English and serves as translator while interfacing with their parents.
To date, over 1,000 students have “graduated” from the West End Preschool. Spanish Translation
